  • Aldous Huxley - At least two thirds of our miseries spring from human stupidity, human malice and those great motivators and justifiers of malice and stupidity, idealism, dogmatism and proselytizing zeal on behalf of religious or political idols.
  • Saw Hellboy yesterday. There are good bits--the sets, costuming, most of the CG--but they're marred by a director who fell in love with the background material. I sympathize; it's tough to balance the material for both fans and not-yet-fans. Yet it's possible, look at X-Men.

Hellboy dragged when it should have leapt. We were told a lot, not shown a lot. It's as if the director had trouble transferring the story from one visual medium to another. That's weird, since comics are like big ol' storyboards. The climax of the first act had more bang than the climax of the entire movie. The only character that I cared for, even a little, was Hellboy (Ron Perlman played the part well). The lead female/love interest? Didn't care. Secondary lead? *pffffft*

I've got to finish reading all of the Hellboy comics. GXRWill introduced me to Hellboy in 1998, with Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. I've read no further.

    That situation should be rectified.

Ooof-dah ~ off to copyedit and do algebra, geology and work on something to submit to a writing contest. Writing contest? Yeah, it's sponsored by a local, private university. The first-place winners in each category get some ducats and a tuition waiver. Here's hopin' that they get inundated with poetry and get just a lagniappe of prose.

    'Bye.
