Another brilliant day in the rain here in Stumptown. Things are calming down after the holiday madness. Along about February 7th it'll be drudgery, but now everyone seems to be relieved.

Happy end of chriskwasolyulekah--Elvis' birthday. I hope your season was, uhm, seasonal.

Sunday afternoon, D and I went to a members-only discount store that's local to the Northwest. It's called Bi-Mart, and it's astonishing. Anything you could want, and many things that defy description. Wow. Two hundred unscented tea lights for $7. All the particle-board furniture in the world. Guns. Re-loading kits. Espresso makers. Cat food. Hair dye. Tcotchkes out the wazoo. Beans. Keys. Televisions. It was a walk through consumerism gone mad.

The other shoppers were a surly, albeit international, bunch. One woman sharply reprimanded her daughter in Russian. A family of Spanish-speakers argued the relative merits of cotton versus nylon granny panties.

It was quite an experience. I can't wait to go back.
